The Fig Tree Restaurant is named after the biggest fig tree in the whole of England,
which grew in the Victorian conservatory at The Manor House.
Its trunk stretched from the ground right to the apex of the high roof and the branches entwined down the steeply sloping glass ceiling.
Today, the Fig Tree Restaurant welcomes diners to an experience that is unique in Bath.
Unlike the city's multitude of eateries, The Fig Tree is housed in a home - an old
Manor House that is listed as a 'British Ancient Monument'.
We even know who lived here in 1262!
Guests need to reserve a table by phone
01225 723128
or by email
dine@figtreerestaurantbath.co.uk
or beth@manorhousebath.co.uk .
The restaurant is only open on Friday and Saturday evenings.
There is just one sitting, so you may arrive and relax, knowing you have the whole evening
to while away eating, drinking and enjoying the company of your fellow diners.
We can even offer a baby-sitting service.
Bring your little ones who will be entertained by an able and responsible 16 year old
in another part of The Manor.
You can check on them if you wish, they can access you if they wish, yet you are
free to enjoy adult company in the knowledge they are nearby, safe and happy.
So, your evening is organised... all you have to do is sit back ...and indulge...
Everything that you eat, is
created by the chef in our kitchen, nothing is bought-in.
Two exceptions
- the sorbets which are laced with vodka, rum or Calvados – and
the
cheeses, carefully selected from a local Bath cheese maker, including organic
'Wyfe of Bath', Englands only organic blue cheese 'Cropwell Bishop' and hand-made Somerset goats cheese amongst others,
which are served with baby figs marinaded in rum and our
regional
Bath Oliver cheese biscuits.
Fresh, local food is the order
of the day and we favour meat and dairy produce that is produced
with attention to animal welfare.
Consequently, our fillet of beef comes from Wiltshire - just across the brook from The Manor House.
Our eggs are always free-range and whenever possible, come
from a flock of
rescued ex-battery chucks now happily pecking
the slopes of
Monkton Combe.
Our own Goose Lucy provides huge
white eggs that we serve scrambled with red and black caviar
and toasted brioche ‘soldiers’.
Our fish is delivered on ice every morning from the fisheman wharf in Devon.
Many of our vegetables are grown organically a mile away in the grounds of Midford Castle and most of
the herbs are grown in The Manor House garden.
Our menu changes every week.
A major bonus
of this hideaway restaurant is that you are welcome to ‘bring your own’.
Wine, champagne and beer is consumed in abundance because you select
it from your
cellar
or your off-licence and bring it to your table.
There is NO CORKAGE
CHARGE,
which makes a considerable difference to the bill!
Unlike the rest
of Bath, parking also is plentiful, nearby and free.
Upon your
arrival, you will be invited to start your evening either beside
the blazing Tudor
inglenook fire with a glass of
champagne,
wine and canapés in winter, or beside an Edwardian marble
fireplace on a cosy
1920’s leather sofa from The Dorchester.
On sunny summer evenings guests often choose to start their evening of indulgence ouside on one of the tables scattered around the garden.
Here guests select from the menu and then
move through to the dining rooms to enjoy the rest of their
epicurean
evening with a three, four,
five or six course dinner.
